Lahnstein

Location and Climate

Lahnstein is located at the confluence of the Lahn and the Rhine, about five kilometres south of Koblenz, in the wine-growing region Mittelrhein. The climate is characterised as suboceanic, with mild summers, mild winters and an average annual temperature of about 9 to 10 °C.

Koppelstein

The area Koppelstein lies between Oberlahnstein and Braubach on the right bank of the Rhine. The elevations range from about 80 to 233 metres above sea level; the terrain slopes down from comparatively flat areas to steep slopes along the Rhine. Geologically, Koppelstein belongs to the Rhenish Slate Mountains. The subsoil consists of clay slate, sand slate and silt slate, as well as quartzite of the Lower Devonian; beneath that are chert gall slate and other sedimentary deposits rich in sand and clay.

History and Landscape

A vineyard site or a vineyard called Koppelstein is documented for 1258 and 1284 in the forms “im Koppele” and “Koppelde”. Historic vineyard areas in the nature conservation area Koppelstein are described today as being largely unused and are developing into dry, warm vegetation communities. The nature conservation area was designated in 1980, expanded in 1998 to include the adjacent Helmestal, and today bears the name Koppelstein-Helmestal.

Mittelrhein Wine Region

In the Mittelrhein wine region, around 70 percent of plantings are accounted for by Riesling and around 10 percent by Spätburgunder. Other documented grape varieties are Rivaner, Kerner, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder. The protected designation of origin Mittelrhein covers wine, quality sparkling wine and sparkling wine. Regional white wines range in colour from pale greenish-yellow to deep golden or amber, and can have aromas of fresh fruits, exotic, floral or spicy notes, as well as an elegant to lively acidity. For wines from the 2026 vintage onwards, the current requirements apply for grape varieties of individual vineyards as well as for the categories Kabinett and Spätlese.
