Kromsdorf

Location and landscape

Kromsdorf is a subdivision of the municipality of Ilmtal-Weinstraße in the Weimarer Land district in Thuringia and lies near the Ilm. The Kromsdorf land consolidation area also includes the cadastral districts of Großkromsdorf, Denstedt, Oßmannstedt, Schöndorf and Tiefurt. The agricultural landscape is partly made up of vineyard areas.

Viticulture along the Ilm

The Kromsdorf wine-growing area is connected with the Ilmtal and the vineyard slopes of the surrounding agricultural landscape. Protected, preferably south-facing slopes and the warmth of the river valley shape the site conditions described for the region. The Weimar Poetenweg was used again for winegrowing in 2008 after a break.

Climate and wine style

Kromsdorf belongs to the quality wine-growing region of Saale-Unstrut with a continental climate, warm, dry summers and cold winters. The area records around 500 millimetres of annual precipitation and roughly 1,600 hours of sunshine. The wines described for the region are considered elegant and fresh, with clearly defined aromas; typical soils are shell limestone and red sandstone.

Cultivation and development

As part of the land consolidation process, new vine plantings and a reorganisation of ownership arrangements are planned. Since 2015, Agrargenossenschaft Gleina has been cultivating vineyards in Schöndorf, Kromsdorf and Denstedt and marketing wines under the names Werkstück Weimar and Weimarer Poetenweg. The work includes, among other things, trimming the vines, tying and bending the shoots, repeated leaf trimming and regular inspections. Part of the vineyard areas was converted to organic winegrowing from 2020 to 2023; newly established areas use vine varieties that are resistant to fungi.
