Location and landscape
Knittelsheim is a local municipality in the Germersheim district in Rhineland-Palatinate and belongs to the collective municipality (Verbandsgemeinde) of Bellheim. The municipality lies between Germersheim and Landau in the Palatinate. Between Knittelsheim and Ottersheim, the Queich meadows extend, with their deeply lying meadow landscapes. The municipal area covers around 637 hectares.
Climate
Knittelsheim belongs to the Southern Palatinate (Südpfalz), which is characterised by a mild climate and many sunny days between the Rhine and the Palatinate Forest (Pfälzerwald).
History
The first documentary mention of Knittelsheim dates from the year 808 and is documented in the White Abbey Codex Traditionum. Archaeological finds also indicate settlement during the Roman period.
Viticulture
The single vineyard (Einzellage) Gollenberg is officially listed in the local part of Knittelsheim and is also recorded as a single vineyard spanning the area of more than one municipality in neighbouring Bellheim. In the Knittelsheim portion, according to the 2024 vineyard register by vineyard area (Weinlagenflächenverzeichnis), a total of 18.7 hectares were planted with vines. Gollenberg carries the vineyard number 810903 and belongs to the large vineyard (Großlage) Trappenberg in the wine-growing region of Pfalz.
