Location and landscape
Kleinlangheim is a market town in the district of Kitzingen in Franconia, in the administrative region of Lower Franconia (Unterfranken) in the Free State of Bavaria. The municipality lies within the natural regions of the Main Franconian Plateaus and the Steigerwald foreland. The Gründleinsbach runs through the area and drains through the Steigerwald foreland to the River Main.
Climate and geology
The Steigerwald foreland has an oceanic-continental transitional climate. For the region, mean annual temperatures of around 8 to 9 °C are given; Kleinlangheim belongs here to the dry-warm part of the district of Kitzingen. The area is predominantly characterised by Keuper marl (Lettenkeuper) and gypsum Keuper (Gipskeuper), supplemented by Pleistocene windblown sand deposits from the Main valley.
History and agriculture
Kleinlangheim received market rights in 1427. Viticulture and fruit growing were, for several centuries, among the town’s important agricultural activities.
Vine growing
The vineyard area in Kleinlangheim is small compared with its former extent today. The Wutschenberg is listed as a vineyard site associated with Kleinlangheim in the Bavarian register of vineyard sites. Kleinlangheim lies within the legally defined quality wine region of Franconia; the use of a vineyard-site designation requires its registration in the vineyard register and compliance with the legal rules for origin.
