Location and classification
Kammern is a cadastral municipality and a designated winegrowing community in the Kamptal. It belongs to the market town of Hadersdorf-Kammern in the district of Krems in Lower Austria. The winegrowing community comprises six legally defined vineyard sites. Hadersdorf/Kammern has been a market town since 1365 and is already mentioned in official records in 865.
Climate and vineyard site Lamm
The Kamptal combines the warm, dry Pannonian influence from the east with cool air from the Waldviertel in the north-west. Hot summer days, cool nights and sunny autumn periods are characteristic. The vineyard site Lamm lies on the south-eastern slope of the Heiligenstein and is one of the hot sites in the Kamptal. Its deep, well-ground subsoil consists of clay and loess; in the upper areas, siltstone and sandstone of the Zöbinger Formation also appear. Reddish siltstone is also described as the erosion material of the Heiligenstein, along with a high proportion of clay.
Cultivation and grape varieties
Lamm faces south and is well exposed. On a large part of the vines, Lyra training is used. At the vineyard site, Grüner Veltliner is grown; a site wine called Lamm is also Grüner Veltliner. For Kamptal DAC, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder are permitted, either as single-varietal wines or as a Cuvée of these varieties.
Protected designation of origin and wine style
Kammern belongs to the legally defined winegrowing communities for Kamptal-DAC protected designation of origin. For wines from vineyard sites, the name of the vineyard site and the responsible winegrowing community must be stated on the label. The style is medium-bodied to full-bodied, spicy to medium-intense in aroma, balanced and without any dominance of Botrytis; the influence of wood is either absent or slight to medium. From the 2025 vintage onwards, the grapes for Kamptal-DAC wines must in principle come from biologically certified cultivation or from vineyards certified in accordance with Nachhaltig Austria. The wines must be bottled in the Kamptal unless the Regional Wine Committee approves an exception.
