Ingolstadt

Location and landscape

Ingolstadt, which is associated with the Rotenberg vineyard Rotenberg, is today a municipal district of Markt Sugenheim in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim in Bavaria. It is not the independent city of Ingolstadt in Upper Bavaria. The place lies in the Upper Ehegrund, a basin between the Kleiner and Großer Ehe, bounded by the Osing and the foothills of the southern Steigerwald.

Viticulture and soils

The landscape is characterised by a broad valley with gentle hills, forests and areas used for agriculture. Small, structured vineyard plots lie between forests, orchards and hedgerows. Ingolstadt has around seven hectares of vineyard area. The soils of the Upper Ehegrund are characterised by gypsum and Keuper.

History and wine-growing area

Ingolstadt was first mentioned in documents in 1220 and remained an independent municipality until 1972. Since then, it has belonged, as a municipal district, to Markt Sugenheim. The official name of the vineyard site is Sugenheim–Ingolstadt–Rotenberg in the Franconian wine-growing region Franken.

Regional wine style

The local winegrowers’ association links the region’s gypsum and Keuper soils with full-bodied Silvaner. This description refers to the Upper Ehegrund and not explicitly to the individual Rotenberg plot.
