Location and winegrowing
Impflingen lies in the Klingbach valley near Landau in the Palatinate and is surrounded by vineyards. Winegrowing is a firm part of local economic and community life.
Single vineyard Abtsberg
To the west of Impflingen lies the vineyard site Abtsberg in the midst of the vineyards. It is officially classified as a single vineyard within the large vineyard site Herrlich, the area Südliche Weinstraße and the growing region Pfalz. The vineyard register lists, in the 2024 harvest inventory, a planted area of 238.2 hectares for Abtsberg.
A local winery describes the soils of the sites it farms as loess clay and loess child. The grape varieties grown there include Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The wine production there includes Pinot wines, fruity Rieslings and red wines.
History
Impflingen was first mentioned as Emphlingen in 1135 in a document of the Klingenmünster monastery. The name of the place is locally traced back to Emphilo, a Frankish courtier who is said to have settled there in the sixth century.
