Location and History
Heuweiler is a municipality at the transition of the Glotter valley into the Upper Rhine plain and borders the foothills of the Black Forest. The church was first mentioned in writing in 1275. Later, Heuweiler belonged to the Habsburg-administered region of Further Austria, before the municipality became part of Baden-Württemberg.
Eichberg Vineyard Site
Heuweiler is associated with the Einzellage Eichberg, whose named vineyard plots extend westwards through the Glotter valley as far as Heuweiler. The wine-growing region lies in the area of Baden and in the Breisgau sector.
Site Conditions
The Eichberg sites benefit from the valley’s thermal circulation. Slopes facing south to south-west receive strong sunshine and are well ventilated. Some slopes have inclines that are comparable to the adjacent steep site Roter Bur. The soils are described as deep and rich in humus; the terroir of the further Glotter valley is shaped by weathered granite gneiss soils.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
For the Eichberg plots near Heuweiler, among others Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder, or Ruländer, Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Weißer Burgunder, Muskateller and Chardonnay are mentioned. Documented wines under the designation Glottertäler Eichberg include dry quality wines as well as red and white wines and Spätburgunder Weißherbst. A Chardonnay is designated as a dry quality wine and has been matured in barrique.
