Location and landscape
Hergenfeld is located in the Nahe between the Naheland and the Hunsrück at the foot of the Soonwald. Vineyards border onto the built-up area of the village. The landscape is characterised by gently undulating fields, small-scale slopes and valleys.
Climate and soils
The municipality describes the climate as mild and suitable for viticulture. Along the boundary of the vineyards near Hergenfeld, naturally weathered slate soil occurs, which is also known as slate phyllite.
Vineyard sites
Hergenfeld’s wine-growing includes the registered sites Herrschaftsgarten, Mönchberg and Sonnenberg. Herrschaftsgarten covers, within the Hergenfeld cadastral area, 4.2 hectares of planted vineyard area, Sonnenberg 3.4 hectares. Mönchberg is listed in the 2024 edition without an area figure. The sites are assigned to the Nahe wine-growing region, Nahetal area, and the Großlage Pfarrgarten.
History and wine character
Agriculture and wine-growing shaped Hergenfeld for centuries. The founding of the village is dated, according to the municipality’s historical classification, to around 969; an initial documentary mention given as 963 was later recognised as a forgery. The village chronicle describes the wines of the Hergenfelder Berg as fruity and light, and attributes these characteristics to the slate soils.
