Location and History
Hangen-Weisheim is a municipality in the Alzey-Worms district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The municipal area covers 4.60 km². The place was first mentioned in 773 in the Lorscher records under the name Witzum.
Wine-growing Region
Hangen-Weisheim belongs to the Wonnegau in Rheinhessen. The wine-growing area is characterised by high plateaus, gentle hills and low-lying sites; the vineyards are mostly on slopes and are usually oriented from south-east to south-west.
Sommerwende Vineyard Site
The Sommerwende vineyard site is assigned to the Bergkloster grand cru. It covers 113 hectares, lies at approximately 190 to 250 metres above sea level and has a south-east to south-west orientation. It was first mentioned in 1769 as “in der Sommerwindt”.
Soil and Wine Style
In Sommerwende, loess overlies pararendzina. The calcareous, deep, light loam with argillaceous silty clay has a high water-holding capacity that is available to plants. The site profile links these soils with yellow-fruit aromas such as apple, peach, pear and citrus, as well as with rather light wines that have a gently acidity and are suitable for early drinking.
