Vineyard sites

The vineyards of Goseck are situated on steep slopes and on terraced vineyard areas. The Dechantenberg is located on the south-west-facing slope below Goseck Castle. The geological foundation consists of red sandstone. The single vineyard site Gosecker Dechantenberg comprises, according to the vineyard register, 1.8504 hectares of planted vine area. The single vineyard site Naumburger Sonneck also includes municipal land of Goseck; its total area is 19.0210 hectares.

Viticulture

At Goseck’s Dechantenberg, viticulture has been documented since 1080; at first it was carried out by monks. On the terraced steep slopes, cultivation is done by hand. The documented grape varieties include Riesling and Weißburgunder. Grasses are sown between the rows of vines, and mechanical weed control takes place within the rows. Pheromone traps are used to monitor both types of grape tortricid.

Goseck belongs to the wine region Saale-Unstrut. The protected designation of origin applies to wine, quality sparkling wine and sparkling wine (Perlwein). Wines from the Goseck winery are described as dry or semi-dry, mineral and typical of the variety; some mature in barriques.
