Location and landscape
Freiberg am Neckar is located in the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg, about 20 kilometres north of Stuttgart, at 48°56′ north latitude and 9°12′ east longitude. The municipal area extends from around 188 to 290 metres above sea level and includes the Neckar valley as well as adjoining higher-lying areas.
The Neckar and soils
At Freiberg, the old Neckar channel has natural banks, steep riverbanks, shallow glide slopes, and sand and gravel bars. At the northern edge of Freiberg-Geisingen, the Neckar valley cuts in approximately as far as the geological boundary between Muschelkalk and Lettenkeuper. The local soil sequence includes alluvial soils in the Neckar floodplain, Parabraunerden formed from loess, and terrace deposits with Keuper sandstone material.
Viticulture
Freiberg am Neckar is a wine-growing community with around five hectares of vineyard area. The vineyards belong to the Großlage Schalkstein in the Württembergisch Unterland area within the wine-growing region Württemberg. A municipal nature conservation programme, from 1 September 2011, provides for the preservation and restoration of vineyard walls and vineyard terraces in steep vineyard sites.
Formation of the town
Freiberg am Neckar was formed in 1972 through the voluntary merger of Beihingen, Geisingen and Heutingsheim, and received town rights in 1982. The permanent exhibition of the town museum covers, among other things, the history of viticulture as well as agriculture, crafts and industrialisation.
