Erfurt

Location and climate

Erfurt lies near the centre of the Thuringian Basin and extends mostly across the Gera-Unstrut lowlands. Higher plateaus and hilly landscapes adjoin it to the south and west. The basin is open mainly to the north and is protected by the surrounding hill ranges. The city has a relatively dry, basin-influenced climate, with around 550 millimetres of annual precipitation and an average annual temperature of roughly 10 °C. Predominant south-westerly winds and the Gera valley form an important ventilation corridor.

Relief and soils

The centre of Erfurt lies at about 190 metres above sea level, while the surrounding uplands reach around 440 metres. The Petersberg rises around 30 metres above the historic city centre and includes a documented area of vineyard. Geologically, among other things, Keuper and Muschelkalk shape the urban area. In parts, stony-clayey soils occur on Keuper and Muschelkalk sediments, and on steep slopes Rendzinas on Lower Muschelkalk.

Winegrowing in Erfurt

Winegrowing in the Erfurt area has been documented since the Middle Ages; for 1121, an initial mention is given. Around 1614, the vineyard area covered roughly 1,500 to 2,000 hectares. A historical link also exists through the 1363 documented donation of a vineyard and estate near Schmira to the Cistercian nuns’ monastery in Erfurt. The municipal show vineyard on the Petersberg was established between 1991 and 1993 with support from Bechtheimer winegrowers and was later maintained by the city, the Petersberg association and, from 2002, the Erfurt Wine Guild.

Pfaffenlehne and Saale-Unstrut

At Pfaffenlehne, between 2020 and 2022, 37,000 vines were planted on 7.6 hectares. Predominantly Riesling, Chardonnay and Spätburgunder, as well as Viognier and Goldmuskateller, grow there. The project documents organic cultivation; a Riesling Spätlese from the 2024 vintage was produced organically and hand-harvested. The wine is classified as a German Prädikatswein, has 11.5 % alcohol and is described as having fresh acidity and perceptible sweetness. With its vineyard plots, Erfurt belongs to the protected designation of origin Saale-Unstrut; the wines are vinified and marketed regionally.
