Erdmannhausen

Location and landscape

Erdmannhausen is a municipality in the eastern district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg and borders the Rems-Murr district. It lies between the Murr valley in the north and the wooded outliers of the Lemberg in the south, on the western edge of the Backnang bight. In terms of natural regions, the municipality belongs to the Neckar basin.

Topography and geology

The municipal area ranges from about 198 to 378 metres above sea level. The lowest point is on the Murr at Bugmühle, and the highest is on the Bilsberg in the Hardtwald. The landscape comprises a gently undulating, predominantly loess-covered high plateau, as well as a wooded area on the Keuper edge heights of the Backnang bight. In the north, a Muschelkalk valley shapes the Murr valley, in the south the Lemberg outliers consist of Gipskeuper; on the Bilsberg, Bunte Mergel of the Löwenstein mountains appear.

History and viticulture

Erdmannhausen was first mentioned in a document in 816, when Emperor Louis the Pious transferred the feudal rights over the settlement, including the church and manorial estate, to the Murrhardt monastery. By 1425, the place had passed entirely into the possession of the counts of Württemberg. Today, Erdmannhausen belongs to the wine-growing region Württemberg and the vineyard site Neckarhälde.
