Engenthal

Location

Engenthal is a district of the market town of Elfershausen in the district of Bad Kissingen in Bavaria. The place is located in the wine-growing region Franken.

History

Engenthal was first mentioned in documents in 1234. In that year, Mechtildis of Henneberg, the widow of Heinrich of Trimberg, sold holdings including those located in Engenthal to the Hochstift Würzburg. On 1 April 1971, Engenthal was incorporated into the market town of Elfershausen.

Viticulture

Engenthal looks back on a long history as a wine-growing village. For centuries, according to the municipality, viticulture was almost the only source of income. The vineyards lie on steep southern slopes; difficult cultivation and uncertain yields are reasons why today only very little wine is still grown. Historically, on the north side of Engenthal around 15 hectares of vineyards, as well as the sites Schloßberg, Kirchberg, Ditzenberg and Mönchberg, are documented. The Engenthal Schloßberg belongs to the area of Frankens Saalestück and to the large site of Burg (Hammelburg).
