Location and history
Dintesheim is situated about 5 kilometres from Alzey and is considered the smallest municipality in the Alzey-Worms district. The first documented mention dates back to the year 778, when it was then known as Tinesheim. Until 1834, Dintesheim was a daughter settlement of Flomborn; in 1924, the town was granted its own mayor’s office.
Winegrowing in Rheinhessen
Dintesheim belongs to the defined geographical area of the protected designation of origin Rheinhessen. The single site Felsen was documented in 1834 as “near the rock”. The name refers to an isolated rock.
Soils of the Felsen site
The site comprises loess and pararendzina soils formed from calcareous dust deposited during the Ice Age. They are deep-rooted, rich in lime, rich in nutrients and well suited for root penetration; they store a great deal of water and show a high potential for growth. In addition, there are shallow to medium-depth, stony and calcareous rendzina soils from tertiary marine deposits associated with calcareous reef formations. They are well aerated and warm up easily, but they store less water and limit root penetration.
Wine style
The loess and pararendzina soils are associated with delicately fruited wines that bring to mind yellow fruit, apple, peach, pear and citrus, showing a gentle acidity and a light to medium structure. For the rendzina soils, mineral, chalky wines with well-balanced acidity, depth and development potential are described; the mentioned aromas are citrus, apple and gooseberry, later also mango and passion fruit.
