Brodenbach

Location and landscape

Brodenbach lies in a long drawn-out curve of the Moselle in the terraced Moselle landscape of Rhineland-Palatinate. The town is part of the wine region Mosel. The Ehrbach and Brodenbach side valleys continuously bring fresh air into the Moselle settlement and shape the local climate.

Winegrowing on steep slopes

The remaining vineyards of Brodenbach are on slate slopes with gradients of up to 65 degrees. The Neuwingert is registered as a single-vineyard site in the winegrowing area Mosel, in the Burg Cochem district and within the Großlage Weinhex. The vineyard area is recorded at less than one hectare; the vineyard carries the number 440540.

Grape varieties and soils

In the Brodenbach vineyards, Riesling is the most important grape variety, including in the Neuwingert. A local winery documents more than 90 per cent Riesling and 10 per cent Spätburgunder on its Brodenbach and neighbouring parcels. The Neuwingert has weathered slate soil. Farming takes place on steep slopes; traditional single-vine plantings of Riesling are also documented.

Historical development

Brodenbach wine sites have been documented as property of the Imperial Lordship of Ehrenberg since the beginning of the 15th century. A lease agreement from the late 17th century mentions 60,000 vines. Around 1900, a large part of the local vineyard estate was brought together in a single winery. Severe winters in the mid-1950s destroyed many vines, especially in the side-valley sites; afterwards, cultivation was abandoned at several locations for economic reasons.
