Location and landscape
Briedern is a local municipality on the Moselle in the district of Cochem-Zell and belongs to the collective municipality of Cochem. The village lies directly on the river, around 2 kilometres from Beilstein and 13 kilometres from Cochem. As a sunny Moselle wine village, Briedern is situated in the terraced Moselle, whose steep slopes are cultivated on small terraces.
Viticulture and vineyard locations
In Briedern, eight full-time and one part-time winemaker cultivate around 52 hectares of vineyard area. Within the Briedern cadastral district, the 2024 vineyard directory lists Römergarten with 30.2 hectares and Servatiusberg with 4.8 hectares. The opposite Rüberberger Domherrenberg is described as Mosel Grosse Lage according to the classification of 1855.
Soils and grape varieties
The Rüberberger Domherrenberg is a terraced slope site, curved towards the interior, oriented from south to south-east, with more than 60 per cent gradient and an area of 18.6 hectares. There are shallow to medium-depth weathered slate and greywacke soils. The Moselle landscape also features sediment soils with silty sandstone containing limestone or quartz and clay slate, often with a high proportion of sandstone. Riesling is the predominant white grape variety in Briedern; in addition, Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Weißburgunder and Grauburgunder, as well as Dornfelder and Spätburgunder are grown. The Rüberberger Domherrenberg is planted exclusively with Riesling.
History
Briedern is first clearly documented in 1275. West of the village, foundations of a Roman villa were found, while Roman burial chambers on the Rüberberg indicate settlement at that time. According to local history, wine was traded along the Moselle from the second century onwards; written evidence continues this trade in the ninth century, when the river was used as a transport route towards the Rhine.
