Location and landscape
Bretten lies in the Kraichgau in the north of Baden-Württemberg and belongs to the wine region Baden. The Kraichgau wine-growing area extends between Wiesloch, Bretten and Karlsruhe. The landscape is characterised by broad valleys, gentle slopes and rolling hills. In the municipality, the elevation ranges from 145.0 metres at the border with Helmsheim, Neibsheim and Gondelsheim to 297.4 metres at the Rotenberg farm; the market square is at 177.0 metres.
Climate and soils
The Kraichgau is protected by the Odenwald and the northern Black Forest. For the wine region, around 2,000 hours of sunshine and 850 millimetres of annual precipitation are given. The vineyards generally lie between 120 and 330 metres above sea level. Vineyard soils include shell limestone (Muschelkalk), Keuper and Buntsandstein, often with a loess overlay.
The single vineyard Altenberg
The Altenberg is an officially registered single vineyard in the Bretten district of Neibsheim. In 2014, the delineation of the vineyard register for the single vineyard was changed in order to digitalise and standardise the registered boundary. Neibsheim was first mentioned in 770 and has been a district of Bretten since 1972.
Winegrowing in Neibsheim
A report from 2022 described a registered vineyard in Neibsheim as Bretten’s only locally reported productive wine-growing area. The cultivated area had, in the process, decreased from an original level of around six to around two hectares. Müller-Thurgau and Chardonnay were planted for white wine, as well as Portugieser and Merlot for red wine. Pruning of the vines took place in January and February, the canopy work in summer, and the harvest in autumn. Further processing and sales were carried out directly by the estate.
