Location and landscape
Benningen am Neckar is located in Württemberg in a Neckar meander opening to the west, opposite the mouth of the Murr. The town belongs to the Neckar basin natural region. Along the Neckar, the municipality lies at about 184 to 190 metres above sea level, and on the higher edges at roughly 260 to 270 metres.
Geological framework
The municipal area includes Muschelkalk slopes and a loess-covered plateau within the river loop. In the tectonic Pleidelsheimer saddle, the Neckar valley widens. On the steep north slope of the Neckar, viticulture is documented, especially in the area of the vineyard Neckarhälde.
Viticulture on the Neckar slope
Historic vineyards north of Benningen feature dry stone walls and vineyard terraces. For viticulture and other agricultural areas, measures for water supply and landscape maintenance are also documented. Under the name “Ludwigsburger Neckarhälde”, dry Trollinger, a delicately full-bodied Trollinger–Lemberger blend, delicately full-bodied Riesling and a dry rosé made from Lemberger are grown. A wine from the terraced vineyards matured in barrique.
Historical background
Benningen am Neckar was first mentioned in records in the year 779. In antiquity, a Roman fort existed at the site. The historic vineyards on the steep bank of the Neckar are recorded as cultural heritage.
