Bad Sulza

Location and climate

Bad Sulza is located in the Thuringian district of Weimarer Land on the Ilm and forms part of the wine-growing region Saale-Unstrut. The wine-growing area extends along the Ilm from the area of Weimar to Bad Sulza. A sheltered, comparatively mild local climate supports viticulture on south-facing Muschelkalk slopes. In the wider region, continental conditions prevail, with around 500 millimetres of annual precipitation and roughly 1,600 to 1,686 hours of sunshine; river valleys form local heat islands, while winter and spring frosts remain important risks.

Slopes and soils

The hills around Bad Sulza are connected with the outliers of the Finne and the Muschelkalk formation of the Ilm-Saale plateau. The Sonnenberg lies on the slopes of the Ilm, is oriented south to south-east, and in some areas has a gradient of about 30 percent. Weathered Muschelkalk shapes the vineyard; the soils are, depending on the level of loess cover, dry to moderately moist, rich in lime and locally very stony.

Viticulture on the Sonnenberg

The Sonnenberg is legally recorded as a single-vineyard site in the Thuringian, large-area free area of Saale-Unstrut. The 2024 vineyard register states 27.3330 hectares of planted vine area and 140.2284 hectares of total area. Cultivated varieties include, among others, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Riesling, Traminer, Muskateller, Cabernet Dorsa and Müller-Thurgau; in the upper slope area, Müller-Thurgau is the main variety. The region’s wines are described as delicate or lively, with fresh acidity and clear aromas, elegant fruit and mineral nuances.

History of viticulture

Viticulture in Sulza has been documented since 1195. A sharp decline followed in the 19th century due to vine louse and downy mildew. On the Sonnenberg in Sonnendorf, viticulture was resumed in 1974 and 1975 by the Agricultural Production Co-operative Niedertrebra. In 1992, the Sonnendorf Winegrowing GmbH was founded there as the first winery in the Free State of Thuringia; since 1998, the business has been located in Sonnendorf.
