Location and landscape
Affalterbach lies on the eastern edge of the district of Ludwigsburg in Baden-Württemberg, at the foot of the Lemberg and near Marbach am Neckar. The municipal area includes the Lemberg and the Buchenbachtal.
Geology and viticulture
The Lemberg consists of reed sandstone of the Stuttgart Formation over softer Keuper gypsum strata. The vineyard plots on its slopes are developed in rocks of the Grabfeld Formation. Rigosoles and Rigosol topsoil deposits occur there; on the lower slopes there are Parabraun soils and Pelosol Parabraun soils from loess-containing slope deposits.
The vineyards on the Lemberg were newly established in Affalterbach between 1972 and 1975. The Neckarhälde is legally designated in Baden-Württemberg as a single vineyard site and Affalterbach is assigned to this vineyard site.
