Location and landscape
Neckarzimmern is a municipality in the Neckar-Odenwald district of Baden-Württemberg and belongs to the region Württemberg. The 8.18 square kilometre cadastral area borders to the south west on the deeply incised Neckar valley and lies in the southern Bauland landscape. The terrain ranges from about 131 to 348 metres above sea level.
Vineyards on the Neckar
The steep slopes along the Neckar floodplain are partly planted with vines. The vineyard sites above the Neckar are on Hauptmuschelkalk, while higher areas are covered by Lettenkeuper. The Neckar contributes to a comparatively mild and balanced microclimate in the wine-growing region. The Götzhalde has been documented as a steep-slope terraced site with a south-westerly orientation, favourable sun exposure and air circulation influenced by the Neckar valley.
Viticulture and wine-growing history
The sites Kirchweinberg, Wallmauer and Götzhalde are assigned to Neckarzimmern in the Württemberg wine-growing classification. The municipality belongs to the protected German wine-growing area of Württemberg, to the area of Württembergisch Unterland and to the Großlage Staufenberg. Muscateller and Traminer have been handed down as historic grape varieties for the steep-slope terraces; wine-growing in connection with the vineyard business above Neckarzimmern has been documented as early as 1184. Dry stone walls shape the vineyard landscape, store heat, support the flow of water away and provide a habitat for animals and insects.
