Location and landscape
Gengenbach is located in the foothill zone of the Central Black Forest in the upper Kinzigtal. The Kinzig runs through the town. The landscape combines valley floor, forested Black Forest slopes and vineyard hills; the elevation is about 175 metres above sea level.
Geology and climate
The geological subsoil consists predominantly of Rench and Schapbach gneisses. To the west of the Kinzig, numerous granite dykes appear. The mild climate, sheltered vineyard sites and plenty of sunshine are described as the conditions for wine-growing.
Wine-growing in Baden
Gengenbach is assigned to the wine-growing region Baden and the wine-growing district Ortenau. The Großlage is Fürsteneck. The individual sites are Kinzigtäler and Nollenköpfle associated with Gengenbach.
Tradition and wines
The wine-growing tradition in Gengenbach goes back more than 1,000 years. An entry from the year 888 records the payment of wine tithes by the Benedictine Abbey of Gengenbach; the abbey was founded around 725. Documented are Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Gris and Spätburgunder as well as the Weißherbst style. From this come white wines, Weißherbst and red wine.
