Sassicaia 2007 Tenuta San Guido

Der Wein "Sassicaia" ist das Aushängeschild des Weinguts Tenuta San Guido, das 1944 von Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta gegründet wurde, und hat seit den 1980er Jahren das Bild der heutigen "Supertoskaner" maßgeblich mitgeprägt. Zunächst war der Wein ausschließlich für den privaten gebrauch des Weinguts bestimmt, doch mit dem Jahrgang 1968 kamen, auf Drängen des Sohns und des Neffen des Gründers, Anfang der 1970er Jahre die ersten Flaschen Sassicaia in den Verkauf. Obwohl er zunächst nur als Tafelwein eingestuft werden durfte, da die französischen Rebsorten Cabernet Sauvignon und Cabernet Franc nicht für italienische Qualitätsweine zugelassen waren, begann mit diesem Wein die Erfolgsgeschichte der Supertoskaner. Ab 1994 wurden in Bolgheri auch Rotweine als DOC-Weine klassifiziert. Inzwischen ist Sassicaia ein eigenständiger DOC-Bereich und umfasst 30 Hektar und hat Kultstatus. Die Trauben für diesen großen Wein wachsen circa 13 Kilometer entfernt von der Toskanischen Mittelmeerküste. Der Wein muss zu mindestens 80%-85% aus Cabernet Sauvignon bestehen. Location and landscape

The Bolgheri Sassicaia growing area lies within the administrative district of Castagneto Carducci in Tuscany. It extends in the area around Bolgheri from the Castiglioncello hills towards the coast. The vineyard plots are situated at around 80 to 400 metres above sea level, with westerly to south-westerly exposure, terraced and gently sloping hillside locations.

Climate and soils

The nearby sea shapes the climate, while the hills protect against cold winds from the north and north-east. In summer, sea breezes provide cooling. For the delimited area, an average temperature of 14.5 °C, 584 millimetres of annual rainfall and a water deficit of 205 millimetres are given. The shallow, stony soils contain, depending on the location, stones, gravel, silt, clay, limestone and marl, and in places iron oxide. The name Sassicaia refers to the stone-rich nature of the vineyard soils.

Grape varieties and viticulture

Sassicaia is produced from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The appellation requires at least 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon; additional permitted red grape varieties may account for up to 20 percent. Tenuta San Guido farms the vineyards, among other things, using a low spur pruning, organic and restrained fertilisation, manual harvesting and seasonal dry pruning and green pruning. Yields are limited to seven tonnes per hectare.

History and maturation

In 1944, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard for Sassicaia in Castiglioncello di Bolgheri. After a private phase from 1945 to 1967, the first commercial vintage was released in 1968. The sub-zone was granted DOC status in 1983; in 2013 Bolgheri Sassicaia became an independent appellation. The wine is dry, full-bodied, firm and structured; at least two years of maturation are required, of which at least 18 months in oak barrels with a maximum capacity of 225 litres.

About the winery

Location and Terroir

Tenuta San Guido is located in Bolgheri in Tuscany, in the Maremma area. The estate, about 2,500 hectares in size, stretches for around 13 kilometres from the hills to the sea. The vineyards are situated at altitudes from 60 to 400 metres and are predominantly oriented westwards to south-westwards.

The microclimate is shaped by the sea and the hills between Bibbona and Castagneto. These protect the vineyards from cold north-east winds, while summer sea breezes create a maritime climate. The soils are varied and include limestone, marl, flint, stones and, in part, clayey areas; Alberese and gabbro are also mentioned.

History and Wines

Mario Incisa della Rocchetta began experimenting with French grape varieties in the early 1940s and planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard on the slopes below Castiglioncello. Sassicaia remained a family wine until 1967. The first commercial vintage was 1968; the wine went on the market in 1971.

The estate’s main red grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Sassicaia is produced from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Guidalberto is a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and is classified as Toscana IGT. Le Difese, first published with the 2002 vintage, is a Toscana IGT cuvée of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Sassicaia and Appellations of Origin

Within the Sassicaia micro-zone, the vineyards are located both in hillside positions at around 80 metres and at altitudes between 250 and 400 metres. The lower sites come from the Lower Middle Pleistocene, the higher sites from the Lower Cretaceous as well as the Eocene-Palaeocene.

Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC has been an independent appellation of origin since 2013 and previously was a sub-zone of Bolgheri DOC. The production specifications require at least 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon; other permitted red grape varieties may make up up to 20 percent. The production area lies within the administrative territory of Castagneto Carducci in the province of Livorno.

Vineyard and Cellar Work

The vines are trained using the low cordon method, with the cordon bent to about 40 centimetres. Tenuta San Guido works with manual harvesting, limited and exclusively organic manuring, as well as dry pruning and green pruning for yield control. Fungicides against powdery mildew and downy mildew are used only when needed; cultivation also includes hoeing, natural weed removal and replacing missing vines.

For the maturing of the wines, in the 1940s the estate introduced French barriques. The current winery for the production and refinement of Sassicaia was set up in the mid-1970s at the entrance to the cypress avenue.
