Location and vineyards
Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan is located in Deidesheim in the Pfalz, a wine-growing region in Germany. The vineyard plots are in Deidesheim, Forst and Ruppertsberg. The climate around Deidesheim is described as mild; the town lies around 0.5 kilometres east of the Haardt and is surrounded by vineyards and the Pfälzerwald forest.
Vines and cultivation
The vineyard area covers 51.90 hectares. Riesling accounts for 85 percent of the grapes grown, complemented by Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, Chardonnay, Scheurebe, Gewürztraminer, Muskateller, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. The soils include heavy clay soils with volcanic rock inclusions, as well as sandy to loamy soils with weathered rock material. The winery is a member of ECOVIN and, according to its own information, works in an organic and nature-oriented way without mineral or synthetic fertilisers.
Wine styles and ageing
The range includes terroir-driven, mineral and ageworthy wines as well as varietal-focused, fruit-driven and expressive wines. An Orange Grauburgunder is produced by mash fermentation on the berry skins, fermented with natural yeasts from the vineyard and developed in a concrete cuvée. For the historical Qualitätswein practices, the winery names the appropriate harvest time, including during the development of noble rot, as well as variety-separated processing in the cellar.
History and VDP
The winery was founded in 1718 by Pierre Jordan. Andreas Jordan shaped the establishment and development of quality-focused winegrowing. Since the title was awarded to Friedrich von Bassermann-Jordan after 1917, it has borne the name Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan. The winery has been a member of the VDP since 1910 and produces wines in the categories VDP.Gutswein, VDP.Ortswein, VDP.Erste Lage and VDP.Grosse Lage.
