Location and Classification
Weisenstein is an officially registered single-vineyard site in the Mosel wine-growing region Mosel, in the Bernkastel area, Großlage Kurfürstlay. The site is Bernkastel-Kues, cadastral district of Kues, assigned and carries the vineyard register number 410305. The 2024 vineyard register shows 14.2 hectares of planted vineyard area.
Site and Soil
The vineyard lies in Kues, a district of Bernkastel-Kues, at the foot of the Mosel. It is described as having a pure southerly aspect and sun right up until the evening. According to a producer description, the vines benefit from the influence of a continental climate. The soil consists of heavily weathered slate, partly with a clay-rich content; the slate is also described as heat-retentive.
Grape Variety and Wine Style
For Weisenstein, Riesling is documented. Descriptions of the Weisenstein Rieslings name wines that are fruity, finely spiced and clearly structured. The deep soil formed from slate is thereby associated with power and a soft acidity structure.
Historical and Craft-Related Notes
The vineyard site is documented on a historic Mosel wine-growing map for the administrative district of Trier from 1868. For its Weisenstein wine, the winery Bastgen describes a spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts in the traditional 1,000-litre Fuder cask, extending into the dry range.
