Walkenberg

Location and landscape

The Walkenberg is a vineyard site in Walluf in the wine-growing region Rheingau. The site is linked with the Wallufbach, or the Mühlbach. The portion classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® covers 1 hectare; overall, 18.5 hectares in the Walkenberg are planted with vines.

Relief, climate and soil

The classified portion lies on a south-facing slope at around 130 metres above sea level, with a gradient of 20 percent. The slope is protected from cold winds from the Taunus. The nearby Rhine contributes to the wine-growing climate and, through its water surface, moderates summer and winter temperature extremes. The soil consists of deep loess loam over a gravelly subsoil; a high proportion of fine earth is indicated for the VDP parcel.

Grape varieties and wine style

Riesling is linked with the statutory wine site name Walkenberg. The classified VDP parcel is designated for Riesling and Spätburgunder. The wines are described as rich and full-bodied, with fruity to spicy notes and a pronounced, harmonious acidity. They benefit from a maturation period of one to two years, or need time to develop.

Origin of the name

The name Walkenberg is derived from earlier walking mills at the foot of the slope, in which textiles or wool were processed. According to information from the municipality, these mills remained in operation until about 1900.
