Location and Size
Treppchen is a registered single vineyard in the Treis district of the municipality of Treis-Karden on the Mosel. The registered vineyard area covers 1.3 hectares.
Topography and Soils
The vineyards of Treis, including Treppchen, belong to steep sites with a slope of up to 70 percent. The vineyards of the Treiser Treppchen stand on soils associated with slate weathering.
Grape Varieties and Wine Styles
For wines with the site designation Treis and Treppchen, Riesling, Kerner, Rivaner and Spätburgunder are documented. For Riesling, there are dry and off-dry wines as well as late harvest and high-quality mature wines. Spätburgunder is documented as off-dry Qualitätswein and as rosé and Weißherbst.
Cultivation and Maturation
At the Gilles winery, most work in the vineyard, in particular the grape harvest, is carried out by hand, since special machines for the steep vineyards are only partially suitable. For wines from the Treiser Treppchen and Treiser Kapellenberg, the winery describes a late harvest, gentle grape processing and controlled fermentation.
