Location and classification
Steinbuckel is an officially listed single vineyard site in Laumersheim in the Mittelhaardt/Deutsche Weinstraße area of the wine-growing region Pfalz. It belongs to the Großlage Schwarzerde.
Area and topography
The vineyard site is assigned number 821722 and, for the 2024 harvest, comprises a planted vineyard area of 63.1 hectares. It lies in a sheltered basin of the Mandelberg at an altitude of 120 to 150 metres and is oriented to the south to south-east. The slope is 5 to 10 per cent.
Soil and grape varieties
The soils consist of loess and loess loam over massive limestone rock, as well as calcareous marl that is heavily interspersed with limestone. Riesling is the dominant grape variety; the classified grape varieties are Riesling and Spätburgunder. Steinbuckel is classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and, in doing so, has a classified area of 25.00 hectares. Cooler winds from the nearby Leininger valley slow ripening and help preserve the acidity. The wines are considered particularly suitable for ageing.
