Steffensberg

Location and geography

Steffensberg is an individual vineyard site in Kröv on the Mosel. The site begins at the municipal boundary with Wolf and extends as far as the Brauneterbach. Its documented area is around 35 hectares.

Relief and soils

Steffensberg is a steep-slope vineyard site with gradients of about 60 percent and elevations between roughly 90 and 210 metres above sea level. The exposure is predominantly to the south; for individual plots, south-south-western and south-eastern to eastern exposures have also been documented. The bedrock and soils consist of Devonian slate, including blue or grey slate. At times, iron oxide inclusions and deep soil profiles are described.

Grape varieties and wines

The site is farmed as a steep-slope vineyard of the Mosel. Deep soils formed from slate are documented as having good water availability, or good capacity for retaining water. Riesling is an important grape variety of Steffensberg and is used for wines with a site name. Documented are Riesling Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese and Trockenbeerenauslese in both dry and sweet styles. The wines are described as fruity, fresh, harmonious and comparatively early to come into drinking condition; the finest Rieslings come from the most extremely steep slopes.

Historical and legal classification

Steffensberg is listed on a historical wine-growing map of the administrative district of Trier from 1868. The site is documented as a single-vineyard (Einzellage) within the Großlage of Kröver Nacktarsch in the Mosel wine-growing region.
