Sonnenuhr

Location and classification

The Neumagen sundial is a named wine-growing site in Neumagen-Dhron on the right bank of the Moselle between Trittenheim and Neumagen. It lies within the Neumagen Rosengärtchens and forms part of the Mosel growing region.

Aspect and soils

The steeply sloping, historically terraced vineyard is oriented towards the south-west and, according to a cultivator, receives direct sunshine all day. For the terraced landscape of Trittenheim/Neumagen Apotheke–Sonnenuhr, a slope gradient of more than 65 per cent is given. The soil is described as a stony, loamy slate weathering soil; for a current plot, Devonian slate has also been documented.

Vines and wine

Riesling has been documented in the Neumagen sundial. A cultivated plot is planted exclusively with Riesling and is hand-harvested. Documented wine styles from this site range from dry through finely off-dry Late Harvest and Auslese to Trockenbeerenauslese.

Historical development

Josef Milz acquired holdings in Neumagen around 1900 and had the name Neumagener Sonnenuhr registered as a trademark in 1907. The vineyards remained with the Milz family until the 1970s, before being distributed among various wineries. A plot belonging to the Reh family was later linked with Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt and in 2015 was leased to Blees-Ferber.
