Seligmacher

Location and Classification

Seligmacher is a legally registered single vineyard (Einzellage) in the Pfalz winegrowing region, in the area of Südliche Weinstraße and the Großlage Königsgarten. The site is located in Landau in der Pfalz, in the Arzheim cadastral district (Gemarkung Arzheim), as well as in Ranschbach, in the Ranschbach cadastral district (Gemarkung Ranschbach). The 2024 vineyard register lists, for vineyard number 810403 179.2 hectares of planted vineyard area in Arzheim and 46.7 hectares in Ranschbach.

Relief and Soils

The Ranschbach portion lies in the Ranschbachtal valley on the sunny southern slope of the Kastanienbusch, and is, for conditions in the Palatinate, partly steep. In the east, Muschelkalk shapes the subsoil; towards the west it grades into Buntsandstein and Rotliegendes. The stony soils of the Muschelkalk area absorb the sun’s warmth quickly and release it gradually to the vines.

Grape Varieties and Farming

A 14.58-hectare classified part of Ranschbacher Seligmacher is designated as VDP.ERSTE LAGE; Riesling is classified there as the grape variety. For this site, Weingut Kranz documents a selective hand harvest with a yield of about 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.

Winemaking and Style

For a Ranschbacher Seligmacher Riesling, Weingut Kranz describes gentle whole-bunch pressing and spontaneous fermentation in stainless-steel tanks with limited pre-clarification. The Rieslings from Ranschbacher Seligmacher are characterised by concentrated fruit and pronounced acidity.
