Location and Classification
Schwarzenberg is a legally registered single vineyard site in Valwig in the wine-growing region Mosel, Bereich Burg Cochem, Großlage Rosenhang. Topography and Soils
Valwiger Schwarzenberg is oriented directly to the south. The plots range from comparatively flat sites to very steep vineyards on exposed rock. A documented plot lies on a rocky outcrop and forms a natural vineyard terrace with greater soil depth and access to groundwater.
The site is described as extremely dry and strongly exposed to the sun. The soil consists of slate of varying grain sizes; in the subsoil, clay is present. In this dry, sun-rich environment, a vegetation cover will be maintained between the vines.
Grape Varieties and Vinification
Riesling is planted in several plots; in addition, Blauer Spätburgunder is cultivated on the south-facing slope. For Spätburgunder from Valwiger Schwarzenberg, the ageing of a small share of the harvest for over twelve months in barrique is documented.
Wine Styles and History
As Valwiger Schwarzenberg, a dry Riesling site wine and a delicately off-dry Riesling Kabinett are listed. The 2024 vintage of the Riesling Kabinett is documented with 10.0 % vol. alcohol, 29.4 g/l residual sugar and 7.1 g/l acidity. The field name “Im Schwarzenberg” is also recorded in a compilation of Valwig field and vineyard names based on records from 1720.
