Location and classification
The Schloßberg is located in Bernkastel, a district of the municipality of Bernkastel-Kues, in the wine-growing region Mosel. In the official register of wine sites of Rhineland-Palatinate, the vineyard site is listed under Bernkastel-Kues as Schloßberg.
Slope and soils
The vineyard site lies directly below Landshut Castle, the location of which gave the site its name. The steep vineyard shows a gradient of 57 per cent for the Bernkastel Schloßberg and extends up to about 300 metres above sea level. The slope is composed mainly of strongly skeletal, slate-derived subsoil with only a small proportion of topsoil.
Grape variety and wine style
Riesling wines are documented from the Schloßberg, including Riesling Spätlese. The barren, shallow soils lead to lower yields and wines with a more strongly concentrated mineral character. The wines are also described as light and lively.
The namesake connection
The Landshut Castle associated with the name was mentioned in Bernkastel as early as the seventh century as “Primumcastellum”. In the year 1280, it came into the possession of the Archbishopric of Trier and served them as a summer residence.
