Location and Classification
Schäwer is an officially registered single-vineyard site in the municipality and the wine-growing region Burrweiler in the wine-growing area Pfalz and in the district of Südliche Weinstraße. The site extends along the southern edge of the village towards Gleisweiler and lies above Burrweiler, below the forest, near the St.-Anna-Kapelle. The vineyard register lists a planted vineyard area of 23.0 hectares for the 2024 harvest release.
Relief and Climate
Schäwer is oriented to the south to south-east, is situated at about 270 to 295 metres above sea level and has a slope gradient of 20 to 30 per cent. The Haardt protects the site from cool westerly winds. Dark slate stores the warmth of the day and releases it again at night; the Haardt heights above are also described as water reservoirs during hot, dry summers.
Geology
As a result of tectonic displacement in connection with the Upper Rhine Graben, grey Devon slate came to the surface at Schäwer. In addition, weathered slate, weathered Bunter sandstone, loam and eroded slope scree material are documented. The name Schäwer is explained as a Palatinate dialect expression with reference to slate.
Varietals and Wine Style
In the VDP, Schäwer is listed as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with a classified area of 7.20 hectares, and Riesling as the classified grape variety. A plot of 0.5 hectares cultivated by Weingut Scherr is planted with Spätburgunder. Descriptions of Schäwer Riesling mention a dry, mineral style with cool citrus fruit, smoky stone and pronounced acidity; citrus and apple aromas as well as fine minerality are also described.
