Rosengarten

Location and orientation

The Rosengarten is in Oestrich in the Rheingau, directly adjacent to Oestrich and close to the River Rhine. The gently sloping hillside, which faces south, shows a SSW orientation, with an incline of about three percent and an elevation of around 90 to 93 metres above sea level.

Soils and climate

The proximity to the Rhine and the vineyard walls that run through the vineyard, storing heat, shape the documented characteristics of the site. The soils are calcareous, strongly gravelly and sandy loam. In places they contain extensive terraced deposits or material from the Alzey Formation; in addition, loess loam is also identified.

Grape variety and wine style

Riesling is the most important and classified grape variety of the Rosengarten. The wines are described as finely structured, with delicate fruit aromas. The sometimes high lime content softens the acidity. The aromatic spectrum includes lime, vineyard peach, apricot and gooseberry.

Name and classification

The name Rosengarten is connected with the former cultivation or care of roses at this site. The historical designation disappeared with the wine market reform of 1971 and was incorporated into Oestricher Lenchen; since the 2014 vintage, the historical name has once again been permitted. The VDP lists the Rosengarten, Oestrich, as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. This classification is a VDP classification and not a statutory German wine-law classification. The area covered by the protected designation of origin Rheingau includes, among others, the districts of Oestrich and Winkel from Oestrich-Winkel.
