Rosengarten

Location and Classification

The Rosengarten is a named wine-growing site in Friedelsheim in the Pfalz. It is classified as a single vineyard within the Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße area and belongs to the Großlage Hofstück.

Climate and History

Friedelsheim lies in a sheltered hollow with a particularly mild climate. In the past, the wine-growing region was known regionally as Waltershöhe and was renamed Rosengarten in 1971. The name was already in use in the first half of the 19th century and is associated with numerous hedges made of wild roses.

Grape Varieties and Chardonnay

Plantings of Riesling, Spätburgunder and Portugieser are documented for the Rosengarten. A Chardonnay plot is on loess soil, has been planted with Pinot clones and is farmed biodynamically. The Chardonnay originating from this is documented as a dry Pfalz Qualitätswein; the grapes are pressed as whole bunches and fermented spontaneously. The wine then matures in barriques, with 50 per cent in new wood, for around 24 months on the lees.
