Rosenberg

Location and size

The Rosenberg, also Niersteiner Rosenberg, is a single vineyard in the municipality and cadastral district of Nierstein in the Nierstein area of the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. The regional profile area covers 53 hectares. The vineyard is located at around 160 to 170 metres above sea level and is described as a plateau above the Red Slope.

Soils

As a soil type, Rotliegend/Rigosol has been documented. This consists of calcareous clay and fine sand deposits from the desert landscape of the Upper Rotliegend. The shallow to medium-depth, calcareous and stony loamy clay has low plant-available water storage, good heat uptake and a medium rooting depth.

In addition, loess/pararendzina occurs, formed from calcareous wind-blown dust deposited during the Ice Ages. This deep, fertile calcareous loam has a high plant-available water storage capacity, good rooting depth and a high growth potential.

Historical and legal classification

The name of the winegrowing site is attested for the year 1750 as “im Rosengarten”. In the 2024 directory of winegrowing sites, Rosenberg is listed as a single vineyard 721011 within the Großlage Spiegelberg, in the Nierstein area and in the wine-growing region Rheinhessen. For the cadastral district of Nierstein, 54.7 hectares of planted vineyard area are recorded there.

Grape varieties and cultivation

A 1,800-square-metre Silvaner plot on the Niersteiner Rosenberg served in 1970 as the documented starting vineyard of the winery Leonhard. In addition, a dry Niersteiner-Rosenberg Chardonnay is also documented as a Spätlese from the winery Staiger. The winery Leonhard describes the use of compost and straw for fertilising, to protect the structure of the soil and to prevent erosion.
