Rosenberg

Location and orientation

The Rosenberg lies above Kinheim in the Mosel wine region Mosel and extends from the area above the town to the east and west. The vineyard site is oriented to the south; the VDP site profile records a south-east orientation.

Soils and climate

The soils of the Rosenberg consist of slate. Parts of the site feature steep slopes with a gradient of up to 42 per cent. The southern orientation is documented in connection with the climatic conditions of the narrow Mosel valley and contributes to solar exposure as well as to heat storage in the slate slopes.

Grape varieties and wines

The VDP lists Riesling as the classified grape variety of the Rosenberg. For the Kinheim Rosenberg terroir, Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder are also documented. The wines covered include Riesling Kabinett with 48.8 g/l, Riesling Spätlese with 66.0 g/l and Riesling Auslese with 101.1 g/l residual sugar.

Classification and history

The Rosenberg in Kinheim is listed by the VDP as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® with Riesling; the classified area is 48.00 hectares. The vineyard site is documented in 1658 in a rent register of Echternach Abbey and was placed in the highest category in the viticulture map for the Regierungsbezirk Trier in 1868. At the foot of the Rosenberg near the Kinheim church, a Roman press installation from the second or third century is also documented.
