Location and classification
Röth is a registered single vineyard in Grünstadt in the wine-growing region Pfalz. It belongs to the Großlage Höllenpfad and lies on the Grünstadter Berg above the town.
Viticulture and wines
Under the designation Grünstadter Röth, dry quality wines made from Spätburgunder and Grauburgunder are documented. A Spätburgunder from a Röth parcel is described as having a high limestone content; it is matured in barrique and bottled unfiltered. The Grauburgunder receives longer lees ageing and is matured in tonneau.
Wine landscape and route
The Höllenpfad, about 5.5 kilometres long, runs through the vineyard site. The route goes through the vineyards on the Grünstadter Berg and offers views of the surrounding wine landscape.
Name and history
The name Röthe is associated with a Gewann in the Grünstadt vineyards and is traced by the local tourism authority back to the clearing of previously uncultivated land. In the Gewann stands the vineyard cottage Weißes Häuschen, built around 1830; there, in 1841, a Roman stone sarcophagus was excavated. A wine designated as Grünstadter Röth was also documented in 1934 following an auction of the 1933 vintage.
