Pommerell

Location and classification

Pommerell is a legally registered single vineyard site in the municipal and cadastral area of Zell (Mosel) in the wine-growing region Mosel. It is assigned to the large area Schwarze Katz and the Burg Cochem sector.

Terrain and cultivation

This very steep vineyard site has numerous terraces and rocky outcrops. The predominant rock is blue slate, which can store water well. Strong exposure to the sun, as well as vines with deep root systems and water-bearing slate, enable the vines to access water even during prolonged dry periods. For transporting fertiliser and working equipment uphill, and harvested grapes downhill, there is a single-rail funicular railway.

Grape varieties and wine

For Pommerell, Riesling is documented by the wine from F. J. Weis winery, known as Zeller Pommerell Riesling. The 2025 vintage is classified as a dry steep-slope wine with 12% alcohol, 6.8 g/l acidity and 11.1 g/l residual sugar. The local producer describes its Pommerell wine as fresh, fine, lightly acidic, fruity and strongly mineral.

Area

In the official vineyard sites directory for 2024, Pommerell is listed under the single-vineyard site number 440407 with 3.3 hectares of planted vineyard area.
