Nußbrunnen

Location and Orientation

Nußbrunnen, also written Nussbrunnen, is a vineyard site in Hattenheim, a district of Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau. It lies to the east of Hattenheim, above the Rheingau railway line. The slope, which faces south to south-east towards the Rhine, is at about 100 to 130 metres above sea level and has a gradient of up to ten percent.

Climate and Soils

The lower Hattenheim site is protected from cool north winds and benefits from high levels of sunshine in the Rheintal. A nearby cut into the terrain further encourages sunshine and the local microclimate. The soils consist, among other things, of deep loess and loess clay, sandy loam, lighter tertiary marl as well as inclusions of quartzite. Impermeable layers in the subsoil support the vines’ water supply even in dry years.

Grape Variety and Classification

The entire site covers 9.7 hectares, of which 2.20 hectares are classified as VDP vineyard area. Riesling is the most important specified grape variety and is listed as a classified grape variety. The VDP lists the Nussbrunnen as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® in the Rheingau.

Name and Wine Style

The name goes back to a spring that was previously surrounded by walnut trees. Its edging in the vineyard is documented as a cultural monument in Hesse. The site is described as producing aromatic, full-bodied wines with distinct extract and a broad range of aromas.
