Nonnengarten

Location and classification

The Nonnengarten is an officially recorded single vineyard site in the municipality and cadastral district of Briedel on the Mosel. In the directory of vineyard sites, the site is assigned to the Bernkastel area and the Grosslage Vom heißen Stein. The vineyard site number is 411102; in 2024, 6.2 hectares were planted with vines.

Relief and soil

The Nonnengarten is described as a steep slope with a gradient of around 60 per cent and a south to south-westerly aspect. The soil consists of blue slate weathering soil.

Grape varieties and wine character

In the Nonnengarten, Riesling is grown. A described Riesling from this site is medium-dry, mineral-driven and shaped by slate. In addition, a preprint published in 2025 documents a revitalisation project for Pinot Noir in the steep slope.

Historical reference and revitalisation

The name Briedeler Herzchen is first documented in 1554 for areas that lie in the present cadastral area of the Nonnengarten. After more than two years without cultivation, the revitalisation project provided for soil improvements, erosion protection and the grassing-over of the steep slope.
