Location and Name
Nonnenberg is the Rauenthaler Nonnenberg, a vineyard site recognised as a single-vineyard site in the Rauenthal district of Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau. The south-facing slope rises above Martinsthal; in the upper section there is a historic villa.
Soils and Vines
The vineyard comprises around five hectares and is fully planted with vines. The deep, stony and gravelly soils consist of phyllite; in the lower slope area, loess clay is added. Some of the vines are more than 70 years old.
History and Ownership
The name Nonnenberg is historically associated with the nearby monastery of Tiefenthal. The property was previously assigned to the monastery; according to local tradition, the slope and buildings were farmed by nuns of the monastery. The winery Georg Breuer is documented as the sole owner and refers to the Nonnenberg as a monopoly.
Riesling
The documented wine from the Nonnenberg is a dry Riesling. The profile of the 2022 vintage describes it as powerful, mineral, with a firm, savoury structure and discreetly spicy notes, with aromas of red apple and citrus fruits. The wine matured for eleven months in old casks with 1,200 and 600 litres of capacity; it is given an ageing potential of 25 years. For the 2022 vintage, careful manual work and a precise selection during harvesting are documented.
