Nonnberg

Location and Classification

The Nonnberg, officially known as Wickerer Nonnberg, lies below the village of Wicker in the Rheingau. Wicker is a district of Flörsheim am Main. The Wickerer Nonnberg is listed as an official geographical vineyard designation in the Rheingau winegrowing region.

Aspect and Soils

The site, which faces south to south-west, has a slope of around 15 per cent and lies between 100 and 129 metres above sea level. The soil consists of clay marl, which is partially interspersed with gravel, as well as loess loam and tertiary marl.

Microclimate and Viticulture

A historic dry-stone wall of broken stones partly borders the vineyard site, stores heat, and protects it from wind. The classified area covers 1.79 hectares. The classified grape variety is Riesling; in addition, Riesling and Pinot Noir are cultivated there. The site is documented as suitable for full-bodied wines with distinct, robust acidity, which may be suitable for longer ageing.

History

The oldest documented mention of the Nonnberg dates from 1281. It reports on a land exchange between the Retters monastery and the Tiefenthal convent, to which a vineyard described as a nuns’ vineyard belonged. At the beginning of the 19th century, the site was remodelled into a south-facing vineyard area through earthworks.
