Location and classification
The Mönchsgewann, also known as Wickerer Mönchsgewann, is located in Wicker, a district of Flörsheim am Main, within the winegrowing region Rheingau. The Wickerer wine sites are assigned to the Großlage area Daubhaus. The VDP lists the site as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® with a classified area of 18.00 hectares.
Topography and soils
The south-westerly facing vineyard site lies at around 110 to 130 metres above sea level and has a documented slope gradient of 15 per cent. The soil consists of clay marl, or tertiary limestone marl, with a loessy clay top layer and gravel layers in the subsoil. These gravel layers also provide a considerable availability of water in particularly dry years.
Vines and wines
For the VDP site profile, Riesling is given as the classified grape variety. The conditions support vines with deep roots; Joachim Flick is identified as the VDP winemaker working in the vineyard. The wines are described as having mineral acidity and are clearly shaped by the marl soil.
Historical name
The name Mönchsgewann refers to earlier monastic ownership arrangements. For the year 970, holdings of the Abbey of Fulda and the St. Johannes monastery in Magdeburg are documented in the site. Later, among others, the St. Stephen’s Foundation and the Carthusians of Mainz were among the owners.
