Location
Michelmark, the Erbacher Michelmark, lies on the northern edge of Erbach along the road towards Kiedrich in the Rheingau. The vineyard site is located in the area of Eltville am Rhein.
Terrain and soils
The domed site slopes gently towards the south-west. The published VDP site data cite a southerly aspect, an elevation of 110 to 120 metres above sea level and a slope of 10 to 20 per cent. The soils consist of deep-rooting, in part gravelly loess as well as loess loam with clay. In some areas there is tertiary marl, soil rich in humus and inclusions of limestone.
Grape varieties and wine style
As classified grape varieties of the Erbacher Michelmark, Riesling and Spätburgunder are designated. A documented Riesling from the site is described as dry, full-bodied and strongly structured.
Classification and name
Erbacher Michelmark is listed as an officially registered single vineyard (Einzellage) in the Rheingau wine-growing region. The VDP classifies it as VDP.ERSTE LAGE® with a classified area of 52 hectares. The name Michelmark goes back to the Old High German michil and the Middle High German michel for a large plot of land; Mark was historically used as a designation for a mountain.
