Climate and soils

Gönnheim and its vineyards are shaped by a mild climate due to their location between the Haardt and the Rhine. The documented plots of the Gönnheimer Martinshöhe range from light soils shaped by sand and gravel, via loamy sand, to heavy clay soils. Part of the area is strongly influenced by calcareous loess. In the sand- and gravel-shaped areas, the vines take root deeply into underlying layers of clay in order to reach plant-available water and mineral nutrients.

Grape varieties and wines

Plantings with Spätburgunder, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are documented for Martinshöhe. The commercially documented range of wines also includes Riesling and Scheurebe. Products from the site are available as dry Riesling, fine, off-dry Scheurebe, dry Spätburgunder, dry Spätburgunder rosé, and as Chardonnay wine from the site. A documented Chardonnay is matured in barrique.
