Marcobrunn

Location and Topography

Marcobrunn lies in the Erbach district of Eltville am Rhein in the Rheingau, near the River Rhine. The vineyard site extends for about 700 metres along the old road between Erbach and Hattenheim. It faces south to south-west, is located at around 90 to 100 metres above sea level, and has a slope of approximately 15 to 30 per cent.

Soils and Climate

The soils consist of tertiary marl and deep loess clay with mica; in places they are strongly calcareous. Good water supply in the subsoil supports vine growth, particularly in hot and dry years. For the area, an excellent soil water supply as well as a low risk of frost and wind are also described.

Vines and Classification

The documented area covers about 7.1 hectares. Riesling is listed as the grape variety. The VDP classifies Marcobrunn, Erbach as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and lists Riesling as a classified variety. From this site, predicate wines are produced regularly.

Name and Historical Source

The name of the site is documented before 1200 as “Markenburne” and from 1275 as “Markenborne”. It is associated with a spring at the historical boundary between Erbach and Hattenheim. This spring was enclosed in 1810 in a neoclassical setting bearing the inscription “Marcobrunnen Gemarkung Erbach”.
